Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá is one of the most famous and well-preserved ancient Mayan cities, located in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it was a major political, economic, and religious center of the Maya civilization between the 7th and 12th centuries.

Key Highlights:

  • El Castillo (Temple of Kukulkán): A 30-meter-high pyramid with 365 steps, aligned with the solar calendar. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, a shadow resembling a serpent descends the pyramid’s staircase.
  • Temple of the Warriors: A vast structure surrounded by thousands of columns, believed to have been a gathering place for warriors.
  • Great Ball Court: The largest and best-preserved ball court in Mesoamerica, where the Maya played a ritualistic ball game.
  • Cenote Sagrado: A sacred sinkhole used for rituals and offerings to the gods.
  • Observatory (El Caracol): A circular structure used by the Maya to study the stars and planetary movements.

Uxmal

Uxmal is one of the most important and well-preserved archaeological sites of the ancient Maya civilization, located in the Puuc region of Yucatán, Mexico. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it flourished between the 7th and 10th centuries and is known for its elaborate architecture, intricate carvings, and impressive city planning.

Key Highlights:

  • Pyramid of the Magician: A unique elliptical-shaped pyramid standing 35 meters high, believed to have been built in multiple phases over centuries.
  • Nunnery Quadrangle: A grand complex of four palatial structures decorated with intricate geometric and serpent motifs.

Dzibilchaltún

Dzibilchaltún is an ancient Maya archaeological site located about 15 km north of Mérida, Yucatán. One of the longest-inhabited Maya cities, it dates back over 3,000 years and was an important trade and religious center.

Key Highlights:

  • Temple of the Seven Dolls: A square-shaped structure named after seven small figurines found inside. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, the rising sun aligns perfectly with its doorway.
  • Cenote Xlacah: A large, open cenote with crystal-clear waters, once a vital water source for the Maya and now a popular swimming spot.
  • Maya Houses and Structures: The site features ruins of residential and ceremonial buildings, giving insight into daily Maya life.
  • Dzibilchaltún Museum: Displays artifacts, sculptures, and historical pieces from the region.
  • Proximity to the Coast: Unlike other inland Maya cities, Dzibilchaltún had strong ties to the coast, facilitating trade with the Gulf of Mexico.
